Dag 1. Ede - Macharen (58 km)

We eventually departed at about 12.30, later than planned but not than expected. A day with surprises. The first was that the foot and cycle ferry across the river Waal only operates in the weekends. So we had to take a detour that we shortened taking a dirt road where we could test our brand new all terrein tyres; they did what they had to do and brought us, not surprisingly, back to the main road. The second surprise was that we couldn't find accommodation in Meegen. The B&B's we contacted where either fully booked, closed or didn't answer our call. When we just had electronically booked in another village, Macharen, the one that didn't respond our call, called us back. We didn't answer either. The third surprise was that we found nobody to welcome us at that booked accommodation, called The Old Rectory. We did our prayers and a simple call solved it all. Surprise number 4: the one and only restaurant in this place, the very well reviewed L'église, closrs on Wednesdays. We fortunately found a pancake restaurant not too far away. The fifth surprise: no rain, only sunshine.
