Dag 9: Montmédy - Verdun (62 km)

7 juni 2018 - Verdun, Frankrijk

Today we started shopping in Montmédy as the author of our travel guide warned that most of the villages we would go through might not have a bakery or a grocery anymore. And right he was. Even in a relatively big town as Montmédy many shops had closed down. The last survivers are Pharmacies and Barbers. Probably rural depopulation creates headaches and long grey hair.

The trip was, to be honest, the hardest so far with quite some 'ups and downs'. And whereas our weather app had promised good temparatures and no rain, only half of the promises materialized. In the middle of nowhere it suddenly started raining cats and dogs. Either Ortlieb, the maker of the cycle bags or myself (almost) has to revise the definition of 'waterproof'. We were soaking wet before we found shelter. Where? At an abondened training centre for cats and dogs!

On our trip through the battlefields of various world and other wars, we now have arrived in Verdun, scene of the longest single battle of the first world war (1916). We spent a peacefull evening on the borders of the Meuse.
