Dag 26: Bourg-Saint-Andéol - Avignon (74 km)

24 juni 2018 - Avignon, Frankrijk

The river Rhône is a surprising manysided river. It often consist of three or more meandering streams ánd a canal to make it navigable. Boats are rare however. There are uncountable waterworks and plenty of bridges, also over smaller affluents. I love bridge(s). Some waterworks generate energy, but we have also passed along three or four nuclear plants, one bordered by windmills.

Today we could benefit from long cycle freeways along the canals and with the wind in the back we had completed 45 kms at lunchtime. The only stops were to take pics of lavender and sunflower fields. We have arrived in the kind of landscape that dominates Van Gogh paintings. The evening walk was to visit the Pont d'Avignon (which is not a bridge) and the Palace of the Popes (where there are no popes), there were more than enough souvenir shops, mostly purple coloured. Not my style. Tomorrow we hope to reach Arles and taste more of Van Gogh.
